New Internship Program Celebration Shines Light on Youth Investment

In its inaugural year, the Will County Summer Internship Program saw an impressive response from 26 local businesses and organizations, which collectively hired 38 students. The Will County Center for Economic Development (CED) is dedicated to investing in the local workforce, nurturing the next generation of talent, and linking businesses with a robust pipeline of skilled individuals. In partnership with Joliet Township High School District #204, the CED crafted a program that provided students with meaningful work experience, career exploration opportunities, and valuable community connections.

During the celebration on August 7, Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant praised the participating employers, stating, “You are providing more than just knowledge; you are offering these students valuable perspectives and insights into potential career paths right here in Will County.”

Kayla Sorensen, the CED’s Director of Investor Relations, expressed enthusiasm for the future: “This is just the beginning. We have much work ahead, and I am thrilled about expanding the program to more schools throughout Will County.”

The program not only achieved its goals but also delivered several unexpected successes for both students and businesses. Three students will continue with their sponsoring companies, and two more have committed to returning for next summer’s program.

Plans are already underway to expand the initiative countywide. We will be reaching out to additional businesses and organizations to host interns next summer, with more details available on our Internship page. We eagerly anticipate the continued growth of the program, the development of our future workforce, and the strengthening of local businesses.
